Martin has worked almost exclusively within the genres of fantasy,
horror and sci-fi. From an early age he decided a career spent drawing
was for him. In his own words, "Foolishly I adhered to this notion
at the expense of all else, but fortunately a way forward happened to
present itself, as I'd stumbled into in the world of role-playing games.
This would've been about 1985, so I'd have been 15 at the time. I became
involved in the production of a couple of RPG fanzines, and so obtained
my first valuable experience of illustrating to order. At that point
I also had the opportunity to work on Dagon, a semi-pro magazine devoted
to HP Lovecraft, for which I co-produced a comic strip with horror author
Brian Lumley. As a result of all this my work received some useful exposure,
which quickly led to my producing artwork for the Games Workshop magazine
White Dwarf. This was in 1986 and I was still at school. Later my involvement
with Games Workshop grew, and over the next few years I worked on lots
of their products, resulting in copious scribblings of Orcs, Space Marines
and Chaos type things."
