Red

Beautiful music and smooth gameplay. You wouldn't think a blast-em-up could be this much fun without explosions. Missile Command inspired.

Alien Showdown

Addictive shoot 'em up. Give it some time learning the controls and you will have a lot of fun with this game. Aiming with the mouse and moving with the cursor keys takes a little getting used to.

Dry_Fire

Rewarding canon laser and screams. Just when it's getting boring, out comes the heavy artillery. Then it's an adrenaline fuelled rush until you die in a blaze of glory.

N-Blox

Tetris clone.

Some more quick fixes:

Alien Abduction - A strangely addictive game as you suck up little people and cars with your tractor beam. Press C to change camera angle and see them being sucked up. Hit M to fire at other ships (are they other aliens or the airforce?)

Lunar Command - Missile Command clone. One of my favourites as a kid and I still kick ass.

Space Invaders

These Java games are so old they're like 80's games themselves:

Alien Scum - Fast paced shoot 'em up.

Asteroids - Smooth, faithful rendition of a classic coin-op.

Bridges - Use your brain just a little bit as you try to build bridges (a red line) across the board.

Missile Commando - Makes you yearn to rub your hands across the coin-op roller ball. Score to beat: 569,980, level 51. Oct 04: Bad news. User Chris Thomas claims to have beaten my high score, with 572,235 points, level 57. Liar.

Tail Gunner - Blast 'em up against flying 3D vectors. Ups: Action! Downs: The kind of game you want to start playing missions with and have a bit more happening after the first few minutes.

Tower of Hanoi - Challenge your mind. Perfect for its genre as it's completely infuriating. I wish I could say I finished it on my first try. There, you've got to try it now.
